Proper Pronunciation Guide

Pinot Noir

[ˏpi no͜un wɑ͜ɚ]

Tips:

  • Pronounce the letter “i” like the name of the letter “e”—
/i/—so that the first syllable is pronounced like the word “pea.”
  • Do not pronounce the letter “t.”
  • Stress the third syllable and pronounce it as the consonant glide
/w/ followed by the R-Vowel Diphthong /ɑ͜ɚ/—like the vowel in “car.”

Practice Sentences:

Brian selected a very nice Pinot Noir to serve with Thanksgiving dinner.
The wine store had a very limited choice of Pinot Noir.

Definition:

  • (noun) A light-bodied, smooth, somewhat delicate and refined red wine, which can be served with chicken, some fish, salads, and vegetarian dishes.

Notes:

The Pinot Noir grape is difficult to grow because it requires a combination of warm days and cool nights, and so the wine is sometimes in short supply, thereby driving the price up. Therefore, Pinot Noir is not as plentiful as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and tends to be a little more expensive.
