Proper Pronunciation Guide

model

[mɑ dḷ]

Tips:

  • Pronounce the letter “o” as /a/—like the vowel in the word “pot”—and stress it.
  • Do not pronounce the letter “e.”
  • Partially explode the consonant
    /d/ into the syllabic “l”—
/ḷ/—, which should be sustained slightly because it is taking the place of a vowel in forming the unstressed second syllable.

Practice Sentences:

The scene designer built a model of the stage set for the play.
The therapist attempted to model the desired behavior for her patient.

Notes:

The sporting goods store, Modell’s, is pronounced with the long vowel /o͜u/ in the first syllable and with the stress on the second syllable [mo͜u dɛlz]: The models worked for Modell’s.
