Proper Pronunciation Guide

it’d

[ɪ əd]

Tips:

  • Pronounce this contraction as two syllables, placing a schwa vowel
    /ə/ between “t” and “d.”
  • Pronounce the letter “t” as a lightly tapped
/d/ in quick speech because it occurs between two vowels in pronunciation.

Practice Sentences:

It'd be nice to go to a film this evening.
It'd been nice seeing them yesterday.

Definition:

  • A contraction for either “it would” (when “it’d” is followed by a present tense verb, as in the first practice sentence) or “it had” (when “it’d” is followed by the past participle of a verb, thereby indicating the past perfect tense, as in the second practice sentence).

Notes:

The reason for inserting the schwa vowel /ə/ between the “t” and the “d” in the pronunciation of this contraction is, very simply, because a “d” cannot follow a “t” in pronunciation—except where the “t” ends a word and a “d” begins the next word, in which case the “t” is stopped-but-not-exploded /t̚ / and the air is then released on the following /d/ as in “it did” [ɪt̚ dɪd].
