Proper Pronunciation Guide

Doug

[dʌg]

Tips:

  • Pronounce the letters “ou” as the short vowel
/ʌ/—like the vowel in the first syllable of the word “country.”
  • Explode the final
/g/ lightly and quickly when it is at the end of a phrase or sentence and make sure it is voiced, as in the first senence below.
  • Link the final
/g/ into the initial vowel of a following word, as in the second sentence below.
  • Stop the “g” but do not explode it /g̚/ when it is followed by another consonant. However, make sure the stopped “g” is voiced, as in the third sentence below.

Practice Sentences:

Doug answers the phone in a firm voice.
The committee wanted Doug to answer questions about his proposal.

Definition:

  • (proper noun) A man’s name, which is short for Douglas.

Notes:

  • Not voicing the final /g/ sufficiently may cause listeners to hear Doug as “duck” (The duck waddled over to Doug).
  • This word is a homophone with the word “dug,” which is the past tense and past participle of the verb “dig.”
