Proper Pronunciation Guide

Aristotle

[ɛ͜ɚə stɑ tḷ]

Tips:

  • Pronounce the first syllable like the word “air” and stress it.
  • Pronounce the letter “i” as the weak schwa vowel
    /ə/.
  • Pronounce the letter “o” as
/ɑ/—like the vowel in the word “top.”
  • Do not pronounce the final letter “e”; rather pronounce the preceding letter “l” as a syllabic “l”—
/ḷ/—and sustain it slightly since it takes the place of a vowel in forming the final unstressed syllable.

Practice Sentence:

In his Poetics Aristotle discusses six "dramatic values" that a theatre performance will have: plot, character, mood, theme, language, and spectacle.
