Proper Pronunciation Guide

subway

[sʌb̚ bwe͜i]

Tips:

  • Be sure to pronounce the letter “w” as the consonant glide
    /w/—and not as
    /v/.
  • Stop the consonant
/b/ at the end of the first syllable—/b̚ — but then, as it is released, blend it into the consonant glide
/w/ at the beginning of the second syllable—[bw].
  • Be sure to lengthen the final vowel /e͜i / because it is a long vowel and is final.

Practice Sentences:

He took the subway downtown.
The musician was playing an electric cello on the subway platform.

Notes:

Blending the consonants /b/ and /w/ to produce /bw/ should come easily to Spanish speakers, who are used to saying, for example, “bueno” [bwe͜i no] , which means “good.”
