Proper Pronunciation Guide

pattern

[ɚn]

Tips:

  • Pronounce the first vowel as
    /æ/—and not, for example, as
    /ɑ/.
  • Pronounce the double “t” as a lightly tapped
    /d/ in quick speech.
  • Be sure to pronounce the final vowel—spelled “er”—as the weak R-Vowel
    /ɚ/ —and not as
    /ə/.
  • Pronounce a very firm, distinct
/n/ and sustain it slightly—especially if it is followed by another consonant at the beginning of the next word or occurs at the end of a sentence.
