Proper Pronunciation Guide

Chevrolet

[ʃɛv rə le͜i]

Tips:

  • Pronounce the letters “ch” as
    /ʃ/.
  • Pronounce the final syllable like the word “lay” and stress it.
  • Do not pronounce the final letter “t.”

Practice Sentence:

The Chevrolet Impala is a very popular American car.

Notes:

The Chevrolet, a make of car made by General Motors, is informally called a “Chevy” [ʃɛ vi] as in Don McLean’s song “American Pie”: “I drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry.”
  • The actor and comedian, Chevy Chase, who took his performing name from Chevy Chase, Maryland, which is a suburb of Washington, D.C., pronounces his first name [ʧɛ vi]. In other words, the name of the car and the name of the comedian and the suburb are homographs— spelled the same but pronounced differently.
