Tips:

  • Pronounce the letter “a” like the name of the letter itself—
    /e͜i/.
  • Pronounce the letters “re” as the unstressed R-Vowel
    /ɚ/ —like vowel at the end of “father.”

Definition:

  • (noun) An amount of land or floor space (in any shape) that is equal to 43,560 square feet; there are 640 acres in a square mile.

Notes:

The usual spelling “er” is reversed (“re”) at the ends of a few words but is pronounced the same as “er” /ɚ/  — acre, timbre, mediocre, and theatre. Sometimes, as with theatre, the word can be spelled either way with the “re” being more of a British spelling.
